A vacation should be pleasant; a place for you to relax and get away from the stress of work or home life for a few days. The chance to unwind, and do something you love. For golfers though, the planning can be so stressful that it ruins the vacation. The easiest way to avoid the stress is to begin early, and focus on what you need to enjoy your golf vacation.
For many of us, golf is not a major part of our lives except for those few days or weeks when we're on vacation, which makes that trip even more special. Start the process by working on a budget. How much are you willing to spend on your vacation? Money is a big factor in the process of planning the vacation because it will determine the type of resort you can afford.
Once you've determine a budget, look around and see what options are available in that price range. You may end up spending less, or need to adjust your budget depending on the type of place you are looking for. You should also decide on a general location as soon as possible. Do you want a golf course near an ocean? Consider courses in North Carolina, California, or Florida. Would you prefer a place with more amenities and activities than just golf? Some resorts offer other luxuries such as spa treatments, shopping, and fine dining.
Another option to consider is if you would rather prefer a hotel or a resort. Many resorts offer complete packages for golfers with schools or lessons included along with the golfing. Other people chose to stay in hotels and use the smaller local golf courses. There is also an abundance of hotels offering a "stay & play" package. Hotel guests can pay a specific amount for a package deal from the hotel, which give discounted rates for the hotel room and greens fees. Pinehurst, North Carolina offers "stay & play" deals that allow the buyer to choose between two different hotels and eight different golf courses. If there is a specific area you are interested in, and cannot find a "stay & play" deal, try calling hotels in the area and asking them about any discounts. Sometimes the deals are available, but not advertised.
Consider the amount of people going on the trip, their skill level, and their interest in golf. If the kids are not interested in golfing, look for resorts that provide a variety of other activities, or near something they are interested in; shopping, amusement parks, movie theaters, etc. If you are traveling alone, look for the best deals for individuals. Some golfing packages quote prices meant for small groups, and charge more for individuals.
When it comes to planning your golf vacation, it all depends on your preferences. Golf packages may cost less, but they will often offer less freedom; the deal stipulates what is included, and may charge more if you add or remove activities. Focus on finding the best deal and plan for your level of skill, and what will make you most happy. Remember, a vacation only comes once a year.
