What you need to know before you buy an elliptical trainer

Created on: September 13, 2007

Elliptical trainers have been growing in popularity for some time, and it's easy to see why. They provide a workout for all major muscle groups, as well as a low-impact workout that's both strenuous and relatively simple. With this being the case, many people are in the market for these machines. Before you buy, however, there are definitely some things you should consider, since elliptical machines can vary.

First of all, you should look at the budget you're willing to allot to the machine. Used trainers can sell for fairly cheap, but make sure you check it out before buying. While the machines themselves don't owe much to technology, focusing instead on body movement for power, if you're looking for a model with resistance technology, make sure it's in good working order.

You'll want to measure the space you're planning to allot to the machine in your home. Take measurements of the length, width, and height of the space before you buy so you can be assured that you'll you'll be able to use the machine to its full power. You should also know your height and weight before you buy in order to ensure that you don't surpass any limitations on the machine. Keep others who might be using it in mind as well.

Another important aspect to consider is the frame of the machine. A heavier frame will be sturdier, and a lighter frame more portable. Electric resistance is also something to look for, as this will make your workouts tougher and better for you. Adjustable pedals are also something to keep in mind if different people will be using the machine. Also, the longer the stride (range of motion) on the machine, the better your workout will be.

If things like electronic displays/preprogrammed workouts and sound matter to you, be sure to check for these before purchase. If you keep these things in mind, you'll have a machine capable of giving you a strenuous yet safe workout in the comfort of your home.
