Short stories: Consequences

the hard way, the only thing to be counted on is change.
Realize, this is good news! For it means that even the cries from a broken heart will not last forever. That is no fairy tale. Losing love is survivable. A new year is known for a grieving lover to be healed. Another season begins and another lost sheep is led home.

Aquarians dance in January celebrations with an awkward appeal and they do not drift, but persevere gallantly ahead in their kooky ways. This somehow provokes others along and their children are heard singing songs to Jesus while they parade their happiness with ribbons and feathers to remind others of youth. Sorrow stops for a moment and hope is born. That moment is too often forgotten and its the moment when sadness sings with the mermaids.

Hope brings smiles.

Birds from far beyond the reaches of the beach will cease their flight in still anticipation of this moment. These city birds are waiting above busy streets, balanced on telephone cables in groups of several dozen trying to escape the hustle below. They, too, seek to hear the lovers' music again. The polluted air with a foul odor gives even pigeons the desire to experience the fairyland tales of the mermaid's song.

But, what about him? What happened to the man she loved whose life was also transformed in an instant? Where did he go when he, too, found himself far away from his amore' ? How did he fare? Does he ever speak of his secret recollections and the song that is still playing in his head? He denies that too many dances were his but he passed them up; and he will never fess up to leaving disappointment behind in the mind of a child when he really could have taken the day off work for a school play.

Life was destroyed by life.

He was caught up in the currents of current events. He got twisted and churned as the hours on the clock turned. Love was devoured by what he could never admit. The lovers drowned because he could not pull them out of the waters when he was in the chat room and didn't know the undertow of society was about to separate the lovers forever. He knows now, but he'll never tell her.

The mermaid tune cannot escape his mind; and it remains in hers as well. No matter how much time has passed; she will always remember that feeling of their first wedding dance and his sparkling ebony eyes that gazed in awe at her when she said "I do." She can never forget how she felt the dancing in her belly of butterflies as he removed her garter with his teeth.

The sounds of laughter
