A living will is a legal document that lets your family members and health care professionals know what life saving measures you want, if you are no longer able to make your wishes known. In other words if you are injured, and unconscious, without having a living will in place, a feeding tube can be placed in your stomach, and you can be fed liquid feedings. You can be placed on a ventilator, to breath for you. With minimal brain function, depending on your general health, you can be kept alive for years like this.
With a living will you can limit the life saving measures taken on you, but it must be put in place before it is needed, with copies to family members and doctors, then in the event that the worst happens, your loved ones will know exactly what you would want done for you.
