Renting a truck for moving isn't as easy as phone call and a credit card. When you do make the call, they are going to ask you what size truck you need. There recommendation charts are usually not very accurate. I recently helped a buddy move and they told him that a cube van would be fine for his 3 bedroom house. He did end up leaving some items behind as they would not fit in the truck.
Consider the size of your furniture, and belongings. Depending on what company you rent from will tell how much room you have in the truck. U-haul trucks have more room from the floor to the ceiling inside, as compared to a ryder truck. Think about your big items. Couches are wide and bulky. Find a truck that you can stand them up in, this will save a lot of room. Remembering that if the door is a seeing up door you must leave room for it to open and close. So you might want to consider putting your couch near the front. If you rent a U-Haul truck they have a spot that is called "MOMS ATTIC" this is a great place to put a couch on its feet and fill it in with smaller, lighter items.
Think about how you might load it before you rent. Try to have an idea of how many rows it might take and how many wide rows. I know that it is hard to do that. However, If I have 2 couch sets, three bedrooms sets and appliances, that gives me an idea that the appliances are wide and so are the couches. So add all your boxes and mattresses, than a cube van might not be big enough. That is not including the rest of the furniture you might have.
If you are renting a car carrier with your tuck, put your valuables that you dint want to get wrecked in your car. This is a place where they can be put without having items placed on top of them. It will also save room in the truck. If you are going to rent a car carrier, the company will want to know the year and make of your car to make sure they have the right car carrier for you.
When they do the walk around, most times they do not look in the box (back) of the truck. Get them to open it and look inside. This will prevent the rental company from coming after you if it comes back with something that was there before you left their yard. Also look yourself for holes or cracks inside. You want to make sure that the truck will not leak if it rains.
Sometimes saving money on a rental truck is not the best. If you rent a truck, you required to go through all scales on highways, and interstates. If you get pulled into a scale or get pulled over, the Department of Transport will do a check of the truck to make sure it is safe. Most times rental trucks have problems. So before you take it. Check it over good.
