Tips for choosing a doctor

Whether looking for a general practitioner or a medical specialist, finding a new doctor can be a daunting experience. During your search, it is important to remember that selecting the right doctor is a personal decision. The doctor that your best friend raves about, may not be the right choice for you.

Begin by making a list of the factors that are important to you. These may include items such as location, office hours, hospital affiliations, and whether your health insurance will be accepted. This list should also include personal preferences such as gender, level of experience, and languages spoken. Also consider your preferred approach to healthcare, especially if you are looking for a doctor who is open to alternative medicine.

Often your health insurance plan will have a list of recommended providers. Doctors outside of this list may have reduced coverage or may not be covered at all. To make the most of your insurance plan, limit your initial search to the recommended providers. Most health insurance companies have online provider directories where you can search by distance, specialty, and a variety of factors. If you are unable to access the directory online, you can call your insurance for assistance.

As you narrow down your list of doctors, check to see if they have a website. If your provider directory does not list one, try searching online for the doctor's name or the practice name. Often websites will list a doctor's education and credentials and may also give a short biography or statement about the practice's approach to healthcare.

Once you have a short list of doctors to consider, you can begin calling the offices. Explain that you are looking for a new doctor and that you would like to ask some questions about the practice. The receptionist may be able to answer your questions or you may be transferred to another person. Confirm that the doctor accepts your insurance and that the office address you have is correct. Consult your list of important factors and ask about any information you could not find online or through your insurance. You may also want to ask how many doctors are in the practice, if there is an on-call doctor for after hours emergencies, and who will see you if your doctor is unavailable. Pay attention to how your questions are received. The office staff's attitude may be a good indication of the practice itself.

Finally, make an appointment with your chosen doctor to go over your health record. Do not wait until you are sick to meet the doctor. A doctor who looks good on paper may still not be the best match for you. When meeting the doctor, be sure he or she answers your questions and respects your opinions. If for any reason you are uncomfortable with the doctor, consider seeing someone else. You may find a doctor quickly and you may need to meet with a few before deciding. Ultimately, your relationship with your doctor is a personal one and you should never be afraid to shop around until you find the best fit for you.
