In the battle of Taste vs Nutrition, i think that it is most important to keep in mind what types of calories we are putting in our bodies. I think that when we start polluting our bodies with foods we are trained to think taste good, then we are jeopardizing our health for the sake of taste.
I think there are many ways to make great tasting healthy foods, and the healthier one eats the better the food tastes. There have been many times where someone I know has resolved to give up soda pop, and after a week or two of a soda free life, they decide they should reward themselves with an ice cold pop, only to find out this thing they seemed so addicted to in the past tastes nasty. This tends to happen with many foods. After I had my baby, i was tired all of the time, and so I would consume a candy bar or something equally as empty in nutrition but chalked full of refined sugar in order to get the boost i needed to make it through the day. Well, several months later I found myself 40 lbs over weight and still constantly tired! Now, I have always been a label reader, and I grew up in a household where we did not eat skin on our chicken and if i wanted candy, then i had better have saved my allowance because I was not going to find much more than a granola bar in the house. The relationship the body has with food has always been an interesting one to me, so i knew better than to load myself up with carbonation, starches, and sugars. But, I did it anyway, and now I am paying the price. There IS hope though. Recently I have joined up with "one of those" weight loss websites (which is totally free and awesome btw www.sparkpeople.com) and have begun to remember what i should and should not put in to my body. NOW if i want to eat something sweet, i grab a nectarine, or grapes, and i drink water. The thing is, you have to train yourself, just like with a lot of things, to believe that these things taste good. For a long time the idea of grapes did not appeal to me, but if they were sitting in front of me, i would eat them (you know, and then go get a candy bar). Now, when i want something sweet my mouth waters for them and it is very rare that i feel the need for something that is synthetically sweet. Well, thats fruit, you may say, fruit is easy to get used to, what about those nasty veggies, those could never taste good unless they are drown in butter and salt or cheese or SOMETHING To make them taste good. I say, whats the point of eating veggies if you are just going to drown them in muck? I usually will cook my veggies without butter and maybe with just a little salt, and i will tell you there is not that much difference in taste without the butter as there was with it. Natural food can be an acquired taste, but if you can force yourself to eat healthy for a month or so, then the junk food just doesn't taste as good anymore.....Soooo, the bottom line is, if it comes down to having to choose one over the other, i would say go with nutrition, because most people can learn to like the taste of many of the healthier foods, but you will more than likely never be able to draw good nutrients from junk food
