Unfortunately, the United States is by no means safer now than we were six years ago. The reason is simple. Our government is a top-heavy beauracracy, filled with incompetent people from top to bottom... and so are the agencies that are supposed to protect us.
But how can it be otherwise? Our polticians - Republican and Democrat - spend their time squabbling amongst themselves, and doing all they can to consolidate *their* power, rather than doing what is best for the United States.
We have unsecured borders, which means millions of illegal aliens are coming into this country, getting "our" jobs, getting "our" welfare money, and ruining the infrastructure of this country in the process.
Is that the fault of the illegal aliens, most of whom are just coming here for a better life, or is it the fault of our government, that has looked the other way for so long so that now it's too late to do anything about it! Indeed, recently a law that would have made it easier to punish businesses who hired illegal aliens was struck down, as it would have been an "unfair imposition" on them. This from the AFL-CIO.
The main problem facing the United States today - and indeed, every country - is incompetence. Most people seem to do the bare minimum on their jobs, and if they see something happening that isn't quite right...they don't report it, they don't care. So three years down the line when the "Big Dig" collapses (Connecticut), or a section of I-64 in Virginia has to be completely torn up and redone because it was ineptly designed, that's millions and millions of dollars down the drain... but the workers don't care because that just means they continue to have jobs...never seeing the larger picture...
And even when workers do complain, their bosses pay no attention. And when the bosses have driven their company into the ground, they are the ones who get a golden parachute, and go off to do the same thing to yet another company, while the people who actually did the work are let to go on welfare.
I used to be a bit of a ...nationist... if that's the term. Whenever I'd read of hurricanes or other natural disasters in other countries, and read of the total ineptness of their government in helping the people and rebuilding the destruction, I'd just shake my head and think, Jeez, why don't they just employ some good ol' American know-how.
Then came Hurricane Katrina and the utter incompetence with which that was met by FEMA - headed by a guy who had no knowledge or experience in the area of natural disasters and how to cope with them. Then more word comes out that it's the same with all disasters, under all governments either Democrat or Republican. People who really need help don't get it, the fraudsters poor in and make their fortunes, and other people continue to live on welfare and whine about not being given decent housing, instead of going out and getting jobs themselves...
Turns out people are people, no matter where you are in the world...
