I don't really know that we are or ever will be 'safer' than we were after 9/11, but we are definately more aware. Prior to the violations of September 11, we had our heads in the sand; we didn't think it could happen to us. Now we know. Now we understand the risk, and we expect our government to do more to make sure it never happens again. We ourselves remain vigilant. We know it could happen, and that makes us more prepared if it does.
While safer is a relative notion, awareness is not. Unfortunately, it seems that some people were aware of these opperatives, but did not act in a timely manner. Many of these men, committing their lives to giving the U.S.A. a black eye, had been flagged before 9/11, and yet they were allowed to get on airplanes and allowed to commit a crime that will be remembered in infamy for centuries to come. This cannot be. Those who support the terror and the bringing down of the US, laugh at our country because we were so easy to get by.
Much of the destruction of this country, however, didn't come in the form of two exploding, imploding buildings; much of the destruction has come from within through a disregard for law as seen by the influx of illegal aliens, and a disregard for the wishes of the American people. If we want to be truly 'safe', we must stand up for the freedoms other men and women have died for; we must not give up without a fight; we must be vigilant, aware, and ready. Instead of embracing the evil of terrorism, we must be willing to fight it whereever it resides. Instead of political staging, we need people who will govern as the founders intended, with the good of the American people in mind and not our next power trip. Instead of 'political correctness', we need to stand for truth, even if it makes some people 'uncomfortable' or angry.
While many blame politicians and other government officials for the failings of this country, I do not. They are merely the symptoms of a deeper problem: apathy. While many people continue to fight for right and freedom, many have given up the fight, they don't even know what the fight is. They go about their day to day lives unaware of the struggle going on around them; they seek personal happiness over the good of the country; they believe what they hear without ever checking it out or thinking it through to it's logical conclusions. I don't believe in luck, but safety can never be held until the citizens, the rightful citizens, of the U.S. start fighting back at the polls, and in the schools, and in the courts for the U.S. our founders invisioned instead of what it has come to be. Safety, if it exists at all, can only be found in getting back to the basics, not only of our constitution, but of our moral base and our faith.
