Reasons to pick up martial arts

The commencement of any venture originates from intention and resolve. The journey into the realm of martial arts is usually begun with the purpose of learning self defense, wanting to participate in a sport or, in the worst case scenario, having an outlet for aggression. None of these reasons are the true way of any martial art and with few exceptions, are the causes of attrition from true conviction.

The essence of martial arts is to:

1. Improve your physical self
2. Connect with your mental self
3. Discover your own truth
4. Search for harmony in all things
5. Master yourself in all situations

Whilst the above seem to be right out of a obscure chapter on idealistic metaphors, there is an accuracy to all of them. A true practitioner of any style of these arts will attest to this accuracy and will encourage any new comer to adopt these principles.

1. To improve your physical self, any martial art will assist you to work on your natural ballistic abilities and improve these movements. The style will display to the student that all parts of the body are connected and that the knowledge of this connectivity will liberate movement more than the student thought possible.

2. To connect with the mental self is to understand your unique nature and to use your talents to enhance your physical self. It is also to conquer the aggressive and introduce the primal warrior that abides in all. It is humble in it's power and grateful for all existence.

3. An individual's truth generally hibernates in inactivity. The connection to physical and mental stimulation brings forward one's talents and gifts in all of life's diversity. The greatest truth is realized through practice of any style and dedication to maintaining a connection to one's spirit.

4. The search for harmony in all things commences from the first lesson in martial arts. Conflict is always avoided, allowing harmony to be the status quo. Self defense is a foundation for confrontation, therefore the principles of self confidence are substituted for defense - once again allowing harmony to exist freely. The visualization of nature's creatures further enhances this harmony.

5. Mastering yourself is all of the above combined with the self taught inner discipline that is forged through training. Meditative movements and the ability to concentrate on nothingness, inspires the practitioner to maintain control of one's self in all situations. This is the martial nirvana and a powerful tool that still applies to contemporary society today.

These are the reasons why people should practice martial arts and the reasons why millions do so, on a daily basis. These arts can be a corner stone of personal growth and the glue that could assist to bind together all of humanity. Allow ego to put itself to rest and the truth will come forward.
