In this world of organic produce, healthy living, and alternative medicine it is hard to know what is good for you and what will work. Wheatgrass juice is a staple at most juice bars and is a wonder food in raw and living food diets. The juice is seen as a cure to just about everything that ails you. So how much of this is true?
Wheatgrass juice first gained popularity in the 1920s. Then it resurged in the 1940s when Ann Wigmore claimed the juice had put her cancer into remission. Wigmore wrote many books on the subject, and proclaimed its benefits until her death. Wheatgrass juice hit its peak starting in the 1970s when alternative living and health became popular.
Wheatgrass is grown on small pallets, usually organically, making it easy to grow in your home, although new research says that wheatgrass grown outdoors has more nutrients. Harvesting happens when the wheat is at its young grassy stage; when it just about 7 to 11 inches. Wheatgrass juice is created when the grass clippings are squeezed through a juicing machine. The result is a dark rich green earthy smelling juice.
The easiest ways to consume wheatgrass juice is by combining it with other juices, since by itself it taste like grass. Some juices to combine it with are; orange, apple, kiwi, guava, carrot, celery, banana, strawberry, or pineapple. At many juice bars you can also have a shot of wheatgrass juice added to any of your favorite smoothies. Wheatgrass can also be bought in tablets and from websites already to drink.
What are some of the health benefits to drinking wheatgrass juice:
neutralizing toxins and carcinogens in the body
improving blood sugar disorders
helping prevent tooth decay
increasing hemoglobin production
keeping hair from graying
improving digestion
reducing high blood pressure
aiding in the prevention and curing of cancer
Now many of these benefits cannot be supported with formal testing. Die hard wheatgrass drinkers believe that the benefits come from the consumption of chlorophyll; yet chlorophyll is not absorbed by the human body. What can be supported is that drinking wheatgrass will benefit the body, much in the way that eating vegetables will. It is natural fiber and is high in iron helping to clean your system.
As in adding any new program to your health rgime you should contact your doctor first. Make sure you have no interactions between medicines you are currently taking and adding wheatgrass juice. Keep in mind also many promoters of wheatgrass are not medical doctors or health professional.
