I have lived through a few hurricanes, I have never been in a tornado. The thing about hurricanes is that unlike tornadoes, earthquakes and tsunamis, they come with plenty of advance warning. We watch them on the weather channel for an entire week before they hit. We have time to board up our homes, fill our water bottles, buy gas for our generators and chain saws, and stock up on non-perishable items. We call our out of state loved ones and let them know our disaster plans and we prepare for the worst. Work and school are canceled and you gather your family around you. Unless you live on an island, you have the time to evacuate. A hurricane is the best disaster to be involved in because there is no excuse for being caught unaware. Tornadoes come up quickly and move quickly. There is little if any warning. Even when proper warning systems are in place you can not evacuate, only find a safer place and pray for the best. Unless they strike in the dead of night, your family could be anywhere, on the roads, at school, work or the grocery store. Tornadoes can literally tear families apart. Both hurricanes and tornadoes leave a devastating trail of destruction but the worst hurricane damage is directly on the coast where people should have already vacated and from the tornadoes spawned by the storm. When hurricanes are deadlier than tornadoes it is almost always due to human stupidity in underestimating the forces of nature.
