Do you want to be in the "know" about Internet sites you need to know about? You should already know about Google unless you were just recently awakened from the dead.
I can still remember making it my desktop users start page back in 1999. They would ask, "What is Google?" I would reply, "It is better than any search engine you are using right now and it loads in just a couple seconds." Of course, then they would ask, "What's a search engine?" To which I would roll my eyes and walk out the door.
Today, keeping up with all the new websites out there has become a monumental task. According to a September 2007 survey by news.netcraft.com, there were 7.2 million new websites registered in the past month. Try tracking down all those websites.
Luckily, there are many ways you can find out about the latest and greatest sites. Of course all the talk right now is about Web 2.0 sites and if you are really in the "know" you might even be looking into Web 3.0 and Web 4.0. One of the best directories of Web 2.0 sites is Go2Web20.net.
From photo sharing to social networking to music sites to just plain old wacky websites, they have it at Go2Web20.net. You could literally spend hours, no days, checking out all the Web 2.0 sites listed at this site.
If you want to know which Web 2.0 sites are the top daily, weekly, monthly or just plain old the best, check out the listings at http://movers20.esnips.com/. According to them, the Top 5 websites as of this writing are: YouTube, MySpace, Orkut, Wikipedia and Facebook.
Another site listing top websites is www.webware.com where more than 5000 of their users voted in ten different categories for their Top 100 sites. The Top 10 sites from webware.com in alphabetical order were Bebo, Firefox, Gaia Online, Gmail, Google, MySpace, Stardoll, Wikipedia, WordPress and YouTube.
For you people on the wacky side, Laptopmag.com came up with the Top 10 Wackiest websites at http://www.laptopmag.com/Featu res/Top-10-Wackiest-Web-2-0-Si tes.htm. Who can go without stopping by hamsterster.com the latest in the pet social networking sites?
So, I am sure as of the end of this writing there is someone somewhere around the world wrapping up the finishing touches on the next top website. For me, my current favorite is www.zaadz.com, where people are trying to create change in the world and the social networking pages don't include glittery snowflakes falling down the page.
