Let me make known some of my beliefs. I am a Bible believing Christian. I interpret the Bible literally, save for the poetry at the beginning of Genesis, and perhaps Revelation. I believe that homosexuality is a sin. I believe that God intended for man to be with woman.
I believe that the government should not be a parent figure. I believe that forcing ethics upon people is wrong. The government, specifically the governments of the democratic west, are in place to protect and serve. There should not be a such thing as a victimless crime, and the government should not legislate based on religious beliefs.
So what do I think about gay marriage? Well, I think that the government has no reason not to allow it. There are tax benefits involved, along with other legal consequences. The only reason the government has for outlawing gay marriage is Christianity. That is unacceptable. If, in the future, the west becomes predominantly atheist, are we to allow them to outlaw private Christian schools, or religious marriage ceremonies? No. The governments place is not in our bedrooms. The discrimination between heterosexual marriage and homosexual marriage can only be found relevant in an ethical argument, not a legal one.
I realize many Christians will find this opinion outraging, so let me make a few statements directed at my critics. God gave us free will, did he not? The government is a minor authority compared to the authority of God, and yet he allows us to choose sinfully, does he not? People, the act itself isn't even the problem, it is the heart. If someone is not living for God, then they are not living for God, it doesn't really matter if they are skimping their waitress out of a tip or prostituting themselves. Homosexuality is a difficult sin to deal with, I worked with a homosexual who became a Christian, and I am amazed every time I think about the will power of that man. We must be sympathetic, not judgmental. It is un-Christian to use the government as a tool to force your ethics upon other people. Take some time and get to know them instead, share the word of God, and love; for that is the most important commandment.
