Answering this question depends on the size of the university. If it is a small college, it may be on equal footing with a community or junior college. If it is a big university, like Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, then I would choose to get my foot in the door at one of the local community schools first.
When you are taking the freshman and sophomore level courses, they are generally the same for all majors. This being the case, it is always better to sit in a room with 20-30 students and a real professor or teacher, than in a hall with 150 others and the ocassional grad student as your "professor".
Transitioning from your high school to a local community college is not such a drastic step as going from high school to a major university. This is on par with going from farm life to the city and having to adjust.
I would recommend a community college for at least freshman to transition into, while possibly taking a class or two at their eventual university campus to start to get used to it.
If you were given scholarships and other incentives to go directly to the university, then by all means jump into that fire. Education and adaptation to this new university will be a little more in the fast lane this way. But, by all means take the money and learn.
