Getting started Podcasting

Getting started with your own podcast is far easier than you might think. To start, all you really need is a decent computer, a good quality microphone which might cost you around 50 dollars, enough hard drive space to save your episodes, good quality headphones and some podcasting software. If you're broke or you're on a tight budget use Audacity. Audacity is an excellent, free, open source podcasting program. For higher end software you can purchase Garageband for around 100 dollars. If you have software that you prefer over these two use that. Most of all, you need a good idea of what you want your show to be about. There's no limit to what you can focus on with your podcast. Just have an idea about how you will execute it. Find some online tutorials on podcasting to help instruct you and get you started with the basics. I would recommend http://www.how-to-podcast-tuto rial.com/. This tutorial was a tremendous help to me when I first started podcasting and I have no doubts that this site can help other beginning podcasters out there.

I use Audacity and the inexpensive microphone that came with my old computer. It's a simple beige Telex microphone and because I have a music podcast, this inexpensive microphone works well for me. If you have a talk show invest in a good quality microphone. The C-1 Studio Condenser Microphone is a good one to use. There are a wide variety of microphones to choose from. This site: (http://www.jakeludington.com/ gadget_envy/20050313_upgrade_y our_podcast_for_under_200.html ) is also an excellent resource for beginning podcasters who want to know what sort of equipment they'll need. A voice recorder is a good idea to have in case you want to do a special show and take your podcast on the road. Say you want to highlight an event like a game or a festival happening in your area? You can record audio as you are out and about and you can add this to your show. Another thing you will need, and this is a must, is a website. You can host your own website through an inexpensive web hosting company like GoDaddy.com or you can get a free blog through Blogger, Wordpress or Movable Type. This way you can post content like mp3s, information, photos and other content that your listeners can access. A website or blog is an excellent way to advertise and inform people about your show. Listeners can also reach you through email or post comments and communicate with you. After you have produced an episode you will need
