The death of a dream is what I saw many times in Nashville. I was standing in a restaurant parking lot one morning and heard a woman crying. She was begging to a man who looked like a sleazy Shark Producer. I had seen many of his type around town and always avoided them. She was dressed like Dale Evans and was holding a little girl in her arms. I got a little closer and heard her say with a desperate cry,"that was my last two hundred dollars, I don't even have gas money to get home"!.
I saw him shrug his shoulders, turn and walk away mumbling something like" that's not my problem". She cried louder as she ran to her car, got in and sped away. This kind of thing happens every day in Music City. People who take advantage of dreamers are the lowest form of scum on earth. It is as bad as preachers who scam money from innocent believers that pay their way to heaven.
A songwriter friend of mine came to my house one night and told me that he was giving up and going home to his family. His eyes were red from crying and his voice was hurtful as a death bedside song. I witnessed a dream in the process of dieing. Even the most mediocre of his songs were better than what was popular in the business. He didn't understand that the music business had nothing to do with talent or ability. It is a monster that promotes what it chooses and kills what it does not! It shreds dreams with it's teeth of lies and corruption.
My friend could not write a song to please the monster and the monster killed his dream. I tried to write songs to please the Nashville scene but they all turned out like plastic coated art. The words, music and tapes all wound up in the trash where they belonged. That is what killed my dream! I conformed to the flow and it murdered my creativity. You see this happen to Artists and writers all over the world when they hold hands with the monster.
A song is not a hit! A person is not a Star! Your dream can die if you reach away from your heart. Money and fame are dust. A beautiful song is eternal.
