Fast zombies are more effective for the end goal of a horror movie - to invoke fear in the heart of its watchers. There is a certain classic horror nostalgia in regard to the slow zombie, something that no longer translates to the majority of society in today's world. It's essentially "played out".

There is a sense of tension in a fast zombie scene. The clenching of ass cheeks and the gritting of teeth in anticipation of whether or not the hero/heroine will escape this time with their life (and flesh) intact.

Slow zombie scenes also create a tension, but only that predicated on intense frustration. We can't relate to the hero/heroine because we're consumed with our judgment of them as lacking common sense. "However can I get away from this slow, lurching, mentally-devoid being? I know, I'll run down this back alley where I run a huge risk of being trapped at both ends when the zombie's posse shows up to get his back. Now I'm running and I'm almost there, but tarnation, I dropped the keys to the convertible top jeep Wrangler! I must go back to get them. Oh no, that slow, stumbling, awkward zombie grabbed my arm. I narrowly escaped. There's his zombie friend with the red-hooded sweatshirt grabbing my ankle and yanking off my Ked as I jump into the back of the jeep. He falls off when my pick-axe wielding side kick shreds out of the parking lot with a squeal of brakes. The zombies are lurching after us. Oh no! I have to knock a few zombies off the back of our ride, but now we're scott free! Phew! However will we survive?"

Fast zombies take the cake on this one.
