You should always be prepared to handle emergencies. For this reason, a good first aid kit should be handy in everyone's home. There are several items which a first aid kit should include. A list of these items are:
Heimlich maneuver chart
disposable gloves
rubbing alcohol or peroxide
antibiotic ointment
band aids in a variety of sizes
gauze
cotton balls
adhesive tape
instant cold packs
petroleum jelly
calamine lotion
hydrocortisone cream
hand sanitizer
saline solution
thermometer
antihistamine
aspirin
nonaspirin pain relievers
syrup of ipecac
scissors
tweezers
blanket
first aid manuel
emergency phone numbers including family doctor, ambulance and the regional poison control center
It would be a good idea to make sure that you are fully knowledgeable of the benefits of each item in your kit and that you are aware of how and when to use them. To achieve this goal you should take a first aid class which includes CPR certification and throughly read your first aid manuel. If there are children present in your home, they should also be educated on medical emergencies in ways which are suitable to their ages. To obtain resources and information on how to do this, contact the American Red Cross.
Proper storage of your fist aid kit is also important. Keep the blanket in a convenient place. The heimlich maneuver chart should be hung on a wall where it is easily seen. All emergency numbers should be kept in a readily accessible place near the phone. The remaining first aid materials should be kept together in a handy box of some sort, preferably one which has compartments to help keep things organized. This box should be clearly labeled and stored in a readily accessible area. You should check your first aid kit every three months and replace any supplies that have expired. Also be sure to replace items as you use them to ensure that everything is always well stocked.
Keep in mind that emergencies can occur at any time. Being prepared to handle them is a key element in reducing stress in the situation and could save a life. Having a good first aid kit on hand is and knowing how to use it is an important step in this direction. The supplies needed for your fist aid kit can be found in drug stores, medical supply stores or even the health and beauty section of grocery and department stores.
