Breathe deeply. Something every doctor tells us to do. The pulmonary system circulates oxygen through the cells of our bodies and filters out carbon dioxide and toxins. There are many health benefits from the powerful practice of deep breathing.
People who suffer from disorders, such as depression, anxiety, obesity or fatigue, can find relief by simply learning to take a few deep breaths. We often allow ourselves to become shallow breathers, but the capacity of the lungs was designed to pump air for use by the entire body. Shallow breathing doesn't even require the lungs to expand, so you can imagine the limits it creates for the body.
There are two major aspects to respiratory function. While the lungs own the primary responsibility for respiration, the diaphragm plays a key role. It is a large, cone shaped muscle located directly beneath the lungs. Its purpose is to assist during times of rest while the body repairs, and during specific activities such as singing.
The diaphragm plays an important role in the lymphatic system and serves as a pump to move fluids through the bloodstream. During times of deep relaxation, it aids in expanding the lung's capacity and can therefore trigger a deep relaxation response in the nervous system.
Without proper air, toxins are not able to move through our system to detoxify the body. We need oxygen to function effectively and generate new blood cells. By taking time to breathe deeply, we can increase tissue function and lift mental fogs or sluggishness. Eating or stress related disorders also benefit from an abundance of air.
Poor breathing can lead to health conditions, such as fatigue, high blood pressure, weight gain and inflammation. It can affect our muscle tissue, resulting in loss, tension and pain. Lack of oxygen can also play havoc with the gastrointestinal system, and create insulin resistance. It can disturb our mental clarity and our ability to sleep. In the long run, emotional conditions, like depression, anxiety and the implications of created by stress produce additional emotional problems as well.
The health benefits of deep breathing include relief from the debilitating symptoms of menopause, such as night sweats, mood swings and hot flashes. It can help with weight loss and provide a form of exercise in some ways. Aerobic activity of any kind, including the act of breathing deeply, will help burn fat, tone muscle and promote relaxation.
