There are any number of reasons that people buy SUV's. It could be a simple personal preference for the style. It could be usefull for work or hobbies. Or maybe you need the room for a bigger family. I knew a girl that swore by SUV's because the 4WD and overall size made her feel safe and she liked the driving vantage point. I've heard far too many reasons than I care to list but none of them is, because they are "gas gluttons".(Which of course, they are).

People love their vehicles and those who have want or need to, will continue buying SUV's. The real onus is on the manufacturers to make vehicles that are more environmentally responsible, while still giving the consumers what they want. Hybrids are a great step in the right direction. And hydrogen fuel cells may be the future. In the meantime, I'm keeping my mid-sized SUV because it's my kind of vehicle and I love driving it. But I'll keep an eye on the manufacturers. When they provide me a better option that suits my needs, I'll definitely jump on board.
