September 11, 2001... you know, the other day that will live in infamy in the hearts and minds of Americans. Today means so much more than just the fall of the twin towers. Today is the day that racial differences didn't matter. Its the day that class barriers didn't exist. Today is the day Old Glory and the Star Spangled Banner mean a little bit more to us than it did before. Today is the day we show a little more gratitude the men and women that serve in uniforms across the board. Its the day America collectively discovered we're not the invincable juggarnaut we once thought we were. I can't speak for anyone else, but as a former servicemember, its the day i felt a little bit closer to my brothers and sisters that did, do and will serve this great country.
There is a saying that those who do not remember history are doomed to repeat it. This above any other reason is why its important to remember the events of 9/11. We must remember the terrorist attacks so that we as a country can maintain a high level of readiness, because its no longer a matter of if another attack will happen but... when. Its important to remember so that we do not forget why our men and women are dying half a world away as we speak, conspiracy theories aside. We have to remember because there are 3,000 Americans that didn't come home to their families after that day.
This day must be remembered, it must live within all Americans, so that we can remind our political leaders just exactly what their jobs are. We could sit here for years and try to make sense of the events of that day and never really come up with the right answers. On this day, above any other day that bares historical significance to us must be learned from. The United States, i would hope, learned a lesson that day, a hard one, but a lesson none the less. We came face to face with our weaknesses, we discovered a fear that had never lived in the hearts of Americans. We found out the hard way that we're not immune to technologically inferior terrorism. At the same time we discovered a heroism that we had forgotten was there. We saw ordinary Americans become heroes in their own rights.
Today... Patriot Day, amid the hours of 9/11 tribute television you'll watch today... REMEMBER. Remember what this event stands for, remember this happened because there are those that would see us fall on our face. Remember this day because its the day patriotism wasn't confined to the men and women in uniform, instead it was shining in every Americans heart. It was the day the United States shouted with New York... "IS THE BEST YOU CAN THROW AT US?! YOU'LL HAVE TO TRY HARDER, BECAUSE WE'RE STILL HERE AND IT'LL TAKE MORE THAN THIS TO BREAK US!"
