9/11 memorial: About the twin lights (World Trade Center)

It is a symbol. It is a symbol of pride in a place where dark deeds were foist upon innocent people. It was a place of raging fire, swirling smoke, and tragic heroism.

It's an amazing place for millions of people around the world to focus their attention on world conditions. It is a place to check the pulse of this beautiful orb. The starkness of this brutalized area is colored by the twin lights. The grayness of oblivion is replaced by rays of light. It is a sad place to be sure, but a place that exudes what America is all about. We open our doors to so many people of so many countries and allow freedoms not felt anywhere else and yet we are hated and despised for this. To say that it is the dog who bites the hand that feeds it is too minimal. But we take a deep breath, we try to understand, we get mad, we remember the past while thinking of the future, we rebuild, in essence we do what Americans do.

We can still be proud to be Americans.
