I've heard it said that being a Mother is watching your heart walk around outside your body. I've never heard it put so honestly. Being a Mother changes everything. "Normal" takes on new meaning. Before I became a Mother, I'd never known the joy of seeing myself in a little living creature. I'd never known the peace that fills my entire soul when my child is warm and sleeping, or the pride I feel when I walk into a room and his little eyes light up. Even the bad times are a joy. When hes sick, he reaches for me. When I walk out of the room, he cries for me. When he hurts, the pain cuts me like a knife. I've never felt so wanted and loved. He's all I think about..I thought I had been in love before, until I met this little boy. He has taught me what love really is. True joy is the little things that come with all that he is... hearing him giggle when I whistle the Andy Griffith tune, the wonder in his eyes as he gazes at the ceiling fan, seeing his excitement over his beloved nu nu (pacifier).
I don't really worry about little things like feeding him or changing him, this all comes so natural to a Mother. I worry about helping him to grow into a good person who is respectful and determined and compassionate. I worry about the steps I take now, that will affect his steps in the future. I know that no matter who comes and goes in our lives, we'll always be a team. I have never known a love like this, so pure, so completely unconditional...and that, my friends, is the true joy of Motherhood.
