As Americans, it is extremely, extremely important to recall history because of the types of values that the United States of America was founded upon. For instance, we celebrate July 4th as the holiday which commemorates our freedom from the British. We have December 7th each and every year so that we do not forget what happened to this country as our brave sailors slept on that warm Sunday morning in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Growing up as a Conservative American Jew for nearly 36 years, I can truly say that I must never forget the Holocaust that occurred during the Second World War in Europe. We cannot forget any period of history because if we do, then we shall see such events repeat themselves.
We must remember September 11, 2001, because we could find ourselves becoming complacent again like we were before that event. The terrorists lived here in the USA among us. They were our neighbors. We passed them in the malls. We took them in when they wanted to learn how to fly without any questions asked. Now that September 11th is six years old and Osama Bin Laden, the main architect and financier of the attacks, is still free, we have to continue to understand that we could be attacked again. As the world sees an increase in numbers of Radical Muslims, then there is a great chance that they could be ready to attack us at any time. Not only on our soil, but American interests all over the world. We must understand and remember what we have done around the world since becoming the most powerful country on the face of the earth. We have been called upon numerous times to help other countries when they feared that they would be destroyed either by internal strife and civil war, or by wars taking place on foreign grounds. We have been termed the "policeman of the world" and so we shall remain as long as there are people who want to see us and our friends annihilated.
Consider this scenario: Should we decide to become complacent as Americans and forget 9-11 and other similar times in American history, then think of the trains as they pass through your cities. Think of those planes as they fly high and proud over your heads and think of those gas trucks that you passed on the highway. They could easily be the tools of the terrorist trade and be on their way to take you, your family, friends and other loved ones from each other in one if not several deadly attacks.
Remember that many of us who continue to live today had friends and family who have lost their lives on that Tuesday morning six years ago. Since then, we have not been attacked. We have been doing our jobs, our government is doing its best to keep those who want to hurt us here at home at bay and we have to continue on this path. We have to remain vigilant. We have to keep our eyes peeled and our ears free.
