According to the Cleveland Clinic the three most common sleep disorders are; Insomnia, Sleep Apnea and Restless Leg Syndrome.
INSOMNIA
Is the most common sleep disorder, with symptoms ranging from inability to fall asleep, stay asleep, awake to early and feeling as tired in the morning as you did before bed. Insomnia is related to stress, anxiety, depression and poor sleep habits in most cases.
The good news is there are several natural treatments for insomnia; turn off the TV computer and bright lights an hour before bedtime and sit and do a quite activity such as reading, writing or meditating. Limit stimulants such as caffeine and alcohol three hours prior to going to bed. Sip a cup of Chamomile tea while enjoying a warn lavender or vanilla scented bath.
Help induce sleep with herbs such as; Melatonin, Valeria Root and Serenite.
Over the Counter Sleeping Pills can work as a quick fix for a person who is experiencing temporary insomnia. Beware they are additive and only work for a short period of time. They come with side effects such as constipation, drowsiness the following day and forgetfulness.
Prescription Medications are only recommend for people with cases of severe insomnia, that natural and over the counter medications can't help. Ambien and Lunesta are two popular prescriptions. Unfortunately they also are additive and the dose usually has to be increased on a regular basis for them to continue to work. The side effects of prescription medications are more severe, headaches, nausea, mood swings irritability and constant feeling of brain fog.
SLEEP APENA
A person suffering from Sleep Apnea, stops breathing for 10-30 seconds hundreds of time a night. Most people are not aware of their condition until spending a night at a Sleep Center.
Natural cures for sleep apnea can be as simple as losing some weight, avoiding caffeine, alcohol, sleeping pills and prescription sedatives and changing their sleep position.
Medical treatments consist of prescription nasal sprays and stimulants such as Privigil. For mild to moderate cases a dental device called a MAD (Mandibular Advancement Device) can be used. It works by pushing the jaw forward to help keep the tongue from falling into the back of the throat when the body is relaxed.
A surgical intervention is another option depending on the cause of the Apnea. Enlarged tonsils, obstructed nasal passages or a deviated septum can be repaired with surgery and put an end to Sleep Apnea.
The most common treatment for Moderate to severe apnea is CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) it is an oxygen treatment, using a mask to cover the nose and mouth while a small machine pushes air into the mask through a tube to help force open the nasal passages and the airway.
RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME (RLS)
Unable to keep your legs still while lying down, accompanied by the pins and needles feeling and often pain.
Natural treatments for RLS; a warm bath before bed, gently massage your calves and relaxation techniques such as meditation and visualization. Once you fall asleep it generally does not wake you up.
Over the counter pain relievers can be used for the muscle like spasms, prescription muscle relaxers and sleeping pills can help you to fall asleep but have the unpleasant side effects.
