Tube Traffic basically involves using free video hosting sites, especially YouTube, to drive traffic to your web site. Popular videos on YouTube typically generate millions of views, so even a relatively modest click-through rate can generate thousands of visits to a site.
There are several books floating around on the Internet that purport to show you how to generate tube traffic, but the reviews on them (other than by those reselling the e-books) are decidedly mixed. Far better to go right to the source: go to YouTube and search for videos that have something to do with your own site. Look at the most popular and get a sense of what's generating the most interest. In general, of course, the most popular YouTube videos are funny or weird; if you can come up with something wacky that has some connection to your site content, you have a good chance of generating tube traffic. Other popular videos involve animation or arresting visuals, or promise a bit of titillation (within the limits of YouTube's content policy, of course).
But not all popular videos on YouTube are of the dog-on-a-skateboard variety. Lectures, presentations and just plain rants can also attract viewers looking for specific information or interested in a particular subject. And a few moments browsing YouTube videos will demonstrate that while high production values may be helpful, they are by no means necessary in creating a popular video.
When you upload your video, it's important that your title, description and tag information contain keywords that will attract the kind of viewers you want. Until (and unless) the video becomes popular enough to show up at the top of the category list, the only way people will see your video is by searching for it, or by having it come up a related to a video they've just viewed. So again, it's worthwhile to look at the popular videos in the content areas you're targeting, so you can use some of the same tags and keywords.
