Ahh, the daily commute. Such a great way to begin the daily grind. Starting out with no traffic in the subdivision, we drive carefully out and head towards work. As we progress towards work, the traffic gets heavier and heavier with the myriad opportunities for an accident or a near accident to set the tone for our entire workday.
There are really just two useful areas for transforming the daily commute from a hassle and waste of time into a time for creative growth. The first is to supplement the commute with an activity that will help us to grow. The other is to find a way to get to work that gives us time to devote our full attention to creativity and growth.
I. Supplement
To supplement the daily commute, we can begin to multi-task. While doing so can reduce the amount of focus we offer to our driving, if the task is chosen appropriately, it ill not increase our risk of an accident.
Audiobooks and Podcasts
Many of us spend our commute listening to the radio for news, traffic, music or comedy. The radio does a great job of providing us with a soundtrack for our drive and can help us avoid focusing on the frustrating aspects of commuting to work. How about improving this solution?
Audiobooks give us a chance to learn from books that we would otherwise not have time to read. Properly chosen books give us introductions to new skills, alternate viewpoints and more information about the world we live in. Audiobooks during a commute break that down into smaller chunks that can be easily learned over the days it takes to work through the tapes or CDs it is recorded on.
Podcasts are very similar, being audio tracks that can contain new information that will be of use to us throughout the day. With the ubiquity of MP3 players, it is easy to carry a selection of podcasts with us that cover a wide range of topics.
Voice Recording and Text-to-Speech
The advances in technology are not just limited to offering us information. They also give us the opportunity to pass on our own thoughts and knowledge. In a commuting situation, often the best way to do this is through speaking. Voice recorders and computers equipped with text-to-speech software give us a convenient way to harness this capability on the road.
A voice recorder can be used to track thoughts we have for recall later. They are small and easy to keep with us. To Do lists can be dictated, thoughts about the design of certain projects can be saved, ideas to write out later or share with colleagues can be preserved.
