Hypoglycemia, while having its common symptoms does not always present the way most people expect them too. While its common to see the patient become sweaty with an altered mental status, some people are only identifiable by people that know them well. They may see just the slightest abnormal behavior that ticks them off to there being a problem. I have found patients with confirmed blood sugars of less then 20 still perfectly functional. These are the most dangerous types of diabetics as when you finally realize there is a problem, there is a shorter amount of time to react before they become unconscious.
After correcting their sugar levels they still appear no different then when the family first recognizes the problem. Your best option being a family member is to always keep an eye out for just a few mild abnormalities. Have them check their sugar routinely and often as too monitor for any changes. As it is the patients responsibility to maintain their heath you must provide assistance as their last line of defense.
