What do you remember of your childhood? what sticks out the most? What was the thing or things that made you more happy, what frightened you to the core? Was there any insecure moments in your life? When did you feel the most secure?
Parents help create the type of world the child recalls. There are other factors involved, environment, nature versus nurture, etc. But it is what happens at home that seems to have the most impact and where memories register, good and bad. Whatever happens out in the real world is judged against how it is taken care of at home. Or not taken care of.
Sometimes there are overwhelming memories of loneliness that one can never shake off as an adult. Sometimes there are overwhelming memories of the opposite, too much love and attention. These situations affect the way adults approach life and how they cope with things.
There must be a middle ground. Perhaps we should not expect perfection as a child. Maybe just a fairly normal life without too many bumps in it will work out for the best. If at all possible avoiding extremes is the answer. Of course this is difficult for a child to understand. Hopefully good judgment by his family, and good coping skills will help out.
In a nutshell kids cannot understand the importance of reflection. It is said that with years comes wisdom. And the kids will grow up and understand one day.
And that may be too late
