How much water you should drink a day is not really an easy question to answer, as not everybody has the same needs. Most dieticians and doctors would say you should drink between six and eight glasses of water a day. However, some people may require more than this for daily consumption.
What is more important is that you are properly hydrating yourself. If you are losing more water due to exercise, or perhaps working outside all day in the hot sun, you will likely require more water, as you will be losing excessive water through perspiration. If you're not feeling well, perhaps you have diarrhea, or you're vomiting, again, you'll be losing more water, so you'll want to consume more to compensate for this. Same if you have a fever, you'll want to make sure you keep yourself well hydrated. I personally always drink much more water when I have a fever, as I feel it helps to flush out the fever faster. If you're a pregnant or nursing woman, you're going to want to consume more water than if you're not, as you'll lose more fluids due to the extra strain on your body.
Symptoms to watch for dehydration are dry mouth and thirst, fatigue, weakness, lightheadedness, dizziness, headache, and little or even no urination.
So how much water you should drink a day really has factors to consider before an answer can be decided, but I would say a safe bet is to start with a minimum of eight glasses a day, and take note on your personal hydration requirements, bumping up your consumption as needed.
Stay hydrated, and stay healthy! :-)
