Mother Sea
take my soul from me
ye vast thrashing creature
spoil it
dash it upon thy rocks
suck the breath from this battered body
with the dark depths of ye liquid
smother me
till there be white bubbles all around
and little mermaids in them wink
their giggles the shattering of crystal
yet pleasant to the ears
drag me down the further
into thy lowly depths
into silence
far from thy lonely surface
thy plants set asway
with churning currents
a burning volcano
turn to rubbish
ye lady of power
a whirlwind of thine own
create
twist thy waters with ye breath
ye bubbling cauldron stir
clasp between thy foaming palms
thy thrashing hurricane child
urge him on with thy spraying breath
fuel him to his terror
urge him to his play
thrust him to it, woman
groan with winds for his destruction
roll thy waves toward his task
now, calm thy tremors, mother
now, take me softly into thine arms
cradle me with thy rocking waves
as the sun doth kiss thy waters
and set thy coat asparkle
purge thyself, good mother
upon thy young rocks
smooth them
as the Potter smoothes His clay
comb them to tiny grains
with thy glist'ning fingers
feed also thy children of the air
soaring high above
and thrust thy fish into their beaks
be life's heartbeat, mother
panting always in and out
as ye exhale the breath of life
upon the shore
take my soul with thee
oh queen and conqueror great
lead me to thy wat'ry grave
to thy throne of power
crown me with thy death and glory
great ruler
give me thy kingdom
fill these lungs with thy glit'ring breath
show me thy powers, watery sorceress
and take the sun into thy breast
shield it till the morn'
take me, wild warrior
into thy vast and endless fortress
so far, indeed
that ne'er may I return
tho' I swim a lifetime.
