Tips for comic book collecting

One word for comic book collecting Addicting', that is right if you are going to start reading and collecting books you are going to find this hobby very addicting and hard to let up once you start.

I went from collecting only Trade Paper Backs/Graphic Novels to having three boxes (they each fit 300 books) under my bed and I keep buying more. Now I don't watch TV, so this is my cable but it is hard to stop almost like a drug, but the nice thing it wont kill me, only bankrupt me. I have even brought my wife into the mix, she has two boxes almost full under her side of the bed, and has at least a shelf full of Trade Paper Backs of her own. So not only is it addicting for your self sometimes it can end up being addicting to others in your family.

One thing about comic book collecting is that it will suck your money away faster than a vampire feeding for it's the first time. You are asking why, because books come out every Wednesday, and unless you are only reading one book a month you will be shelling out money every week, on these hot little art books. You also have to figure out your commitment, to a series because comics do events and crossovers so you have to figure out how much you are willing to commit to collecting. Because the moment you start getting more books, you will start getting every event book, miniseries, and crossovers which might even move you to collecting another monthly book.

One thing that can hurt is back issues, they will kill your wallet, so my suggestion is to find a book or books you can hop on to with out having to read a lot of back issues to figure out the story. One thing to remember is if you find a back issue some where that you need, BUY IT. Back issues are out of print books you have to buy things when you see them other wise you might not see them again, and end up traveling the country side searching every comic shop with in driving distance. For some things you might even go to other provinces/states, even cross boarders. There are some good on-line retailers that have huge catalogs of back issues, I have usually found the one or two things I need on-line, and it is cheaper then driving around wasting gas.

One thing you can do if you don't want back issues costs is buy collections of Trade Paper Backs/Graphic Novels. Now these aren't going to be worth as much money in the future like a 1st edition comic, but you get entire story arch's collected in proper reading order. They usually save you money if you're
