A stock photo site is a website housing images that can be used by individuals. This includes digital photos that can be used on your website. If you are doing your own website (or even if you aren't but want to look for the perfect image yourself) then there are many places you can search for the exact photo you need.
There are several types of stock photo sites some you have to pay for each photo; some you pay a membership and then you can get photos for free; others offer free photos, sometimes with conditions.

When you are choosing a stock photo site, make sure the photos are a good quality high resolution and in focus and also choose photos from a site that allows you to view the photo/s in the proper size, not thumbnail. That way you get the real picture, not a dodgy likeness that you can't really make out.
If you are going to use a free stock photo site, make sure you read the fine print as there may be conditions on the use of the photo. For example, you might need to mention who took the photo or where you got it from. There are a lot of free sites out there: http://www.sxc.hu/ is one of the best and biggest on the internet. http://www.photocase.com/en/ is also a great site. Some of it is in German, but the photos are top quality and once you register, the service is free. http://yotophoto.com/ is a comprehensive site that searches a range of other free stock photo sites, saving you the trouble. Just type in what you are after and yotophoto will search for it amongst other sites and deliver you the results.
http://www.luckyoliver.com/ has an interesting sideshow' atmosphere: the website is worth visiting just for the analysis of photos it gives. You need to purchase tokens' (in keeping with the carnival theme) to buy photos.
http://www.istockphoto.com/ind ex.php is another paid site, they also have a clearance section where you can buy images that are being deleted off the site and going cheap!
There are many stock photo websites offering images either for free or sale. You are sure to find the one you want.
