The mystery of substance abuse and other existing addictions

Most human beings have an addictive personality by nature.
Don't we all like the feeling of freedom, of being loved, of being able to relax, of being happy and carefree?
These are just a few of the feelings given to us by drug usage.
Some of us have had exceptionally horrible experiences in our past, and find it hard to get along in everyday life without a little something to help us along. Denial may be a big part of this, but who wants to live through a traumatic childhood, even into their later years?
Who wants to recall the loss of a child or loved one? Nobody wants to go through any of that, and sometimes we find ourselves looking to alcohol or drugs to 'numb' our feelings, those raw, nasty emotions that consume some of us day in and day out.
Mind altering substances help many of us to get through life where we would otherwise not function properly.
