Hidden surfing towns: Best places to avoid the crowd

What makes a hidden surfing town? To be a hidden surfing town, you must have two things: obscurity and secrecy. There is a village on Lake Rathbun's southwest edge. It sits seven miles west of Moravia on Hwy 146. Do know of this Iowa surfing gem? It is named Iconium.

If you're looking for a vacationing crowd, Iconium has a hundred people. There is a huge, bait shop attached to a boat and camper rental business. A family, ice cream parlor just re-opened last year. The nearest gas station is a British Petroleum (BP) location in Moravia. Basically, you are alone to bring or rent a boat and take off on the water. It is what you want, right?

Around Iconium, there are dozens of newly-built condos and townhomes. These are available throughout the year to rent for months at a time. The properties come with privacy decks where people can sunbathe risque, if they want to. Some of the properties also come with their private waterways that lead to Lake Rathbun. Picture driving your speedboat down on your own pond, and then coming upon the lake with other boaters and sunbathers watching you. Trust me. They're not only watching you. They're hating you. The condos I mentioned bring along $150k-$200k price tags. However, they can be rented for as little as $2500 a month. You'll receive a full-size bathrooms, kitchen, dining room, den and a balcony or patio. Home security is top-notch. Each dwelling is installed with the latest in systems. Also, a private security company polices the locale diligently.

You have surfing, boating, sunbathing and solitude. What are you waiting for? I'm already here.
