California's Central coast has the most beautiful scenery, nicest beaches, and best of all the state's best waves. There are many different spots for catching great waves, such as Santa Cruz, Capitola, and Half moon bay. But the bet place to surf to avoid the crowds is with out a doubt the peninsula know as Monterey.
Monterey peninsula is primarily known for vacationing families and rich retired people. Which is the best disguise for a great surf spot. This is why the locals love to surf in the beaches of Pacific Grove, Seaside, Carmel-by-the-sea, and Monterey. When people travel to the Central California coast looking for gnarly waves, the only place they will go is Santa Cruz, neglecting the other terrific beaches in the area. Therefore the local surfers in Santa Cruz over time have become very territorial and do not like the fact that outsiders are invading their beaches. Since Monterey does not attract many vacationers looking to surf this area is a lot more open to outsiders.
Some of the best surfing spots with friendly surfers and pleasant waves on the Monterey peninsula can be found by Pacific Grove at Asilomar beach, In Pebble Beach, Carmel beach or Carmel river mouth. For beginners I recommend the beaches around the wharf in downtown Monterey and Del Monte beach in Seaside. The water is cold year round so a wet suit is necessary but that does not take away from the experience one bit. The waves that crash on the shore on the Montery peninsuala are unforgettable and are worth the trip. Besides Surfing the area also offers many other activities in the downtown areas of Monterey and Carmel, so if the waves are dead, which is very rare, there is a lot of other activities going on.
