How to reduce employee turnover

Recognize, Relate, Reward

It it not hard to thank someone for a job well done. Fundamentally we need to acknowledge the person behind the job. As an employer taking a personal interest in your employees will add the human element. When employees feel valued they work harder. This doesn't mean an employer must or even should become involved in the employees personal life but a simple gesture of asking how the family is doing from time to time or remember the children or spouse by name goes a long way.

Be relatable, upper management is often not relatable to worker bees, yet at the end of the day we all have family, friends, likes, dislikes and hopefully a life outside of work. Dale Carnegie was a master at being relatable and still having boundaries. He remember people by name, took an interest in their work, complimented, corrected and mostly inspired people to be their best.

Reward employees for a job well done. It is important to give credit where credit is due. Celebrating every win in some way is a great first step. If productivity goes up, thank your employees and let them know that things are better because of their efforts not your management style.

Many companies have discovered that offering, profit sharing, stock, employee owenership, counseling services (not HR related, daycare, and even a nurse on site has increased productivity, stifled employee complaints and reduced sick days. The more services that are offered to employees that create convenience, comfort and the general feeling that they are cared for the more likely employees are to not only stay but work harder to increase the bottom-line.
