Many studies into the qualities of a successful manager delve into the abstracts of group dynamics and interpersonal relationships. For the first time, front line manager or supervisor, this may be just too much to digest. Maybe its simply time to get back to basics. Management is getting work done through people. At one time or another we have all heard about or taken the quiz which is used to define your personal management style. Too much one way and you are tagged "task oriented". Too far the other way an you are "people oriented." The ultimate management goal is to be an even blend of both.
What characteristics does a new manager or supervisor need?
A new manager needs to be aware that they have been given a position of power and power corrupts. A new manager needs to be tuned into his or her own psyche enough to realize if and when they are using the power of their position inappropriately. Is the new manager observing the rules which apply to everyone? Arriving and leaving on time, making appropriate use of office resources, minimizing personal phone calls etc. Managers must lead by example. Never ask a subordinate to do something you wouldn't do yourself.
Treat all in your charge equally and fairly. Be cautious about fraternizing with your employees. You are responsible for evaluating and promoting or discharging employees. This is hard to do with your good friends.
Be consistent. Nothing is more damaging to your credibility than to be viewed as wishy washy and your employee's levels of respect for you will plummet.
Begin with a positive stroke when you need to take a corrective action with an employee. Take the case of an employee who is always late with reports but the content is brilliant. Compliment the employee on the quality of the report then suggest that keeping to assigned deadlines can only increase the impact of the content.
Get to know the employees in your charge. They have homes and obligations that may take their mind off the tasks at hand from time to time.
The fact that you are probably as close to an expert in the work being done is, more than likely, got you promoted to a position on the management team. Use this expertise to teach your employees what you have learned in order to get the job done. Never let a teaching opportunity slid by. And while you're at it, learn something new everyday. You are in a well placed position to learn from those over you and pass the learning on to those under you.
Lt Col Jay Kopelman, USMCR(Ret), the author of "From Baghdad with Love" advises leaders to be definitive and assertive in their actions. Be Confident.
If you can succeed in getting all the people in your boat rowing in the same direction, you will find your job becomes easier, you move closer to your goals and the work you and your team has been charged with gets done with less stress and better overall results.
