Children love to learn about new things every day. Especially animals.
We bought our eldest son, 2 baby guinea pigs when he was 20 months old, as we had just had another baby ourselves.
It has been lovely watching him learn to take care of, respect and understand these little creatures who have now grown into adult guinea pigs. We now have quite a few babies running around in the garden too. Now at 3 years old he is responsible enough to show his friends/cousins how to treat all animals wherever we see them.
He likes to visit the local farm and shows his little brother (with great confidence)which animal is which and what they do.
Parents don't need to spend lots of time and money organising trips out to farms or zoos, or even on pets, to help encourage children appreciate animals. Animal Planet is a great channel for discussing wildlife with them and pop up books are great fun too. Get the pencils and drawing books out and spend some real bonding time with the kids too.
