Does the Atkins Diet really work? I thought it did. When I first tried the Atkins Diet I was amazed at how easy the weight came off. I lost 30 pounds in a matter of months. I never felt hungry, I got to eat all the meat and cheese I wanted and, after a while, my carb cravings did subside. But, the truth is, it is unhealthy to cut entire food groups out of your daily diet for the rest of your life. Not to mention unrealistic.
Every diet expert will tell you that the key to a "diet" is finding something that you can commit to for life. That is why most experts try not to use the word diet at all. You need to find a lifestyle change they will say. I found that no matter how much I liked having chicken and vegetables every night for dinner, there was no way I was going to stick to it for the rest of my life. When I got to the point when I was supposed to start adding carbs back in my diet, it all went wrong from there.
I started to gain back the weight that I had lost and eventually ended up gaining back more weight than I lost in the first place. I never could find that perfect balance of carbs that the Atkins Diet suggested I find. As soon as carbs re-entered my system, the cravings came back and that was it.
So, for anyone out there about to embark on the Atkins Diet, I urge you to reconsider. It may work for the short-term but your long-term health and goals will surely suffer.
