"Big Cops. Small Town. Moderate Violence." At first "Hot Fuzz" seemed like a rip-off of "Super Troopers" to me. It was a good thing I was wrong!
The movie follows the career of Nicolas Angel, a constable whose career had just been moved from London to small town Sanford. Upon arrival he is taken aback by the law and order - or lack of. It seems that anyone can break the law! In fact, Angel arrests several kids for underage drinking, and arrests his future-partner for DUI. After everything gets sorted out, Angel finds himself in the dull small-town life where nothing happens. Ever. When strange "accidents" start to happen to people that have connections to one another, Angel's cop instincts take over - only to not be believed by the rest of the police force!
The humor was great. There were several one-liners that I had to laugh out loud for. I was expecting crude humor, but found myself laughing more at slapstick and stupidity. I was even more surprised when the story started to develop a more serious side to the plot: the struggle between Angel and his unwanted partner. However, the movie-makers did not forget the humor through the duration of the climax.
The only downside I could find was the motivation of the antagonists. They were slightly humorous, but ridiculous none-the-less. Believable, but unbelievable at the same time. Another setback I found was that I was unable to keep some of the lesser characters straight. They didn't receive much screen time for them to actually become a character in my mind. Important characters were forgotten until the moment of importance.
Pros: Humor, Action, General Storyline
Cons: Minor characters, Antagonists
The Bottom Line: If nothing else catches your eye, go for this.
Viewing Occasion: Good for Groups
Suitable for kids fourteen and up due to an excessive amount of cussing throughout the film.
All in all, "Hot Fuzz" in an exciting movie that is fun for you and your group of friends to watch together. Not only can you laugh about how funny the characters are or discuss who is the killer, right up until the very end.
