and privileges you enjoy in our phenomenal part of the globe. Never forget, because even if they came home "alive", they still gave the life they knew to provide you with the life you have. They
deserve your respect, honor and gratitude, and you should prove your appreciation, even if it is in a minor way.
Try the following, even just once; go to a "Dollar" store, and with 10-20 bucks, you can fill a bag with shampoo, soap, a comb & brush, toothbrush & paste, soap bars, nail clippers & fingernail brush, a face cloth, hand & bath towel, 1 or 2 pairs of socks & underwear, and couple juice boxes & soft cookies (fig newtons are best because they taste good and are nutritious). These things can be bought for $20.00 (I've done it). Then go to the closest goodwill or thrift store, pick up 1-2 medium sized undershirts, a proper shirt or two, and a 5 to 10 dollar store credit to be used for a pair or two of pants, &/or footwear. All totaled, you can give a homeless man a small hand up (not a hand out), and it may give him enough confidence and courage to pull himself off the street. Even if you substitute things from your own closet, items you no longer use and would have donated to a thrift shop, you will have spent less than 35-40 bucks. You could also, alternatively, give the
bag to a local priest, reverend, pastor or rector, or to a director at the local YMCA, as they would be best aware to whom the bag would be the most useful & most valued.
If you intend the bag for a female, include hair conditioner and a good facial lotion, perhaps even some curlers and/or some hair dressings (barretts, clips, ribbons or ties, etc) as well as some basic make-up: mascara, a multi colored eye shadow kit, light toned blusher, a brown or black eyeliner pencil and a simple compact (choose a medium beige equipped with a mirror). Include tampons, because homeless or not, women do menstruate and not having a simple method to care for your self during that monthly time is inordinately degrading (if you really want to know how much, on your next period, use pieces of cloth that have to be washed, and you can only use enough cloth to have one to wear while the other is washed and drying). Consider adding a couple small gift certificates, for specific use at a grocer or fast food restaurant (grocers will ensure that only food and hygiene products can be purchased, no drugs, alcohol or tobacco).
I hear people constantly complaining about the need to "do something" about the homeless, but the
