How to tell if you are successful in life

anything but a small bit of time and effort, and even if they don't thank you, you have planted a seed within that person, so perhaps the next time they are in your position, maybe they will give up their seat, or help someone with a coat or groceries. You don't have to see it happen to know you performed a good and righteous deed. And every tiny act of such kindness and courtesy can effect someone else, maybe tomorrow, or next year, and it may be a neighbor to the recipient of your act, or it may be a stranger thousands of miles away; you never know, and you also may end up as the recipient of a kindness that began with you from years and miles before.

Here is another of my pet peeves; (I'm allowed to state them, this is my opinion, and you are not being forced to read this) the way the general population looks at, or rather down upon, all homeless people. Yes, many of them are annoying, or intrusive, or smell bad, or offend you in some way. You have the right to be offended, but maybe it is time that we, as a society, truly looked at why we are offended. For those of us fortunate enough to have a roof, bath, kitchen or even a
hotplate, and even the most minimal wardrobe, the world doesn't look that threatening. However, to most of the homeless, this earth is a terrifying place in many ways, not the least reason being that they have no real place to call their own, a place inviolable by weather or other people. Realize that a great percentage of the general population are a mere paycheck or two away from the same situation, and perhaps then, you might understand that the reason your heart is so cold to
these unfortunates is not because of them, but because of your own fear of being them; remember "there, but for the grace of God, go I", and you will know that the homeless person you see before you, is more probably a reflection of how real is the possibility you see yourself. Consider also, that a shocking number of these fellow humans, are veterans from one branch or another of the military. These souls placed their lives in front of us at home, to provide us with the freedom to have our opinions, to voice our beliefs and ideas, to worship in the manner we choose.

Whether you agreed with or disapproved of whatever conflict applied to any of these veterans is not as important as is the fact that they went, to protect your right to approve or not, so that you and yours could live with the freedom to choose how to live, where to worship, and all the other rights
