Small spaces require furniture that performs more than one function, it must double as storage or functional space and look good doing so. Take stock of what you already own and what your storage and furnishing needs are. Keep in mind while browsing catalogs and sales that you need to find pieces that will cover more than one requirement. If you love the look of a particular item but it doesn't adhere to the rules, keep looking! Perseverance always seems to turn up just the right piece!
When you find a prospective piece, take a good look and make sure it is built strong and shows quality. A well made piece will enhance your home, a cheap furnishing will detract from the overall effect. Buy pieces that you love the look of. In a small home every inch of decorating real estate has the potential to add value or waste it. Given that the space is smaller, spending a little more for quality won't break the bank either.
Keep in mind that the rooms you are buying for are three dimensional. You can go upwards with your decorating scheme to capture underutilized spaces on top of tall furniture near the ceiling, or down to take advantage of wasted space underneath tables or beds. Attractive baskets and boxes can provide a great place to stash out of season holiday decorations, spare guest linens or hobby supplies, while utilizing interesting textures and patterns to provide visual interest. Wall space can also be used to display a favorite collection. Many display racks also offer an enclosed cupboard or drawer. Paying a little more for such a feature adds valuable storage to your small living space as well as providing camouflage for life's necessities.
When buying, make sure each piece has a split personality and will perform more than one function. Does the couch make into a sofa bed for guests? Will the coffee table provide adequate storage, or does the top serve as a comfy ottoman? Dining tables such as gate-leg or drop-leaf styles will fit into a small kitchen, while also offering the convenience of opening up to accommodate a larger crowd for a special occasion.
Look at the option of displaying items that would normally be tucked away. If you have a small kitchen, try using a plate rack to clear cupboard space, or hanging racks for your pots and pans. If you enjoy a sport or hobby that uses attractive equipment, consider hanging it on the wall as a decorative item.
Once you've gotten used to requiring your furniture to earn its place in your home you'll never go back to buying just for looks again!
