Poetry: Children

She watched that bus pass by the house wishing hard that she could
Please grandma let me go, I promise I'll be good
It's not quite time, not just yet, amidst her saddened sighs
The disappointment in her face, the heartache in her eyes

She got there early today, trembling with excitement at the wait
This is it, it's here , it's here, I simply cannot be late
She climbed the steps or rather took them at a crawl

Struggling to reach the top, her little legs were very small

She looked back at me beaming with her smile
Threw up her arm, she'd waited such a while
Off she went, now she was cool
First day of school

My phone rings at work, Grandma come get me I hate it here, she sobs
What's wrong baby, you've waited so long, "I hate it gobs"
That boy with the glasses keeps staring at me
I fell in the hall and skinned my knee
That girl with the blond hair has a pen that glows
And that boy beside me picks his nose
Well baby that's kids they pick and tease
Come get me grandma, please grandma , please
Home from school, hey how was your day
It was the best, glad you made me stay
Back on the bus, proudly holding the sheet of grades she made
Running in the house, Grandma I passed first grade

The phone rings at work, Grandma come get me I hate it here
What's wrong baby, it should be easier this year
That boy with the freckles keeps staring at me
My desk is in back and I can't see
The boy with the glasses keeps pulling my hair
My teacher makes me stay in that chair
Well baby, that's kids they pick and they tease
Come get me grandma, please grandma, please
I sit in the gym as she receives the rewards she had earned
I noticed as she stood her complexion turned
Shyly embarrassed as they announced achievements she made
Running in the house, Grandma I passed second grade

The phone rings at work, Grandma come get me I'm sick
She chokes out a sob to make it stick
OK , what's really wrong babe
It's that new boy named Gabe
He poured milk on me at lunch today
There's a poem I forgot how to say
The work is too hard, I can't do it I can't
The big girl is mean, I'm scared, her breath was a pant
Well baby that's kids they pick and they tease
Come get me grandma, please grandma please
Proudly she shows me the report she made
Grandma, Grandma, I passed third grade

Get up girl, yes you are going to school today
I'm sick ,I'm really too sick to even play
They'll make me eat lunch and I might throw up
That big girl that hates me might show up
The boy with glasses just won't leave me alone
Please grandma, please, let me stay home
I hate you, I won't
