Ladies and Gentlemen please welcome the fastest man on earth Bill Gates? That's an exaggerated comment but the meaning is quite clear. If steroids are allowed in sports the athletes with the greater access to money will win. The clean athletes that have virtually no finances will not exist. I still am amazed when someone from Kenya, Ethiopia win Olympic gold. Even though these athletes haven't the finances of Americans, Chinese, Russians etc. they win because they are great athletes. It is so refreshing to see a rags to riches story especially in sport. Can you imagine (if steroids are legalised) the domination of world sports from the richest nations on earth. Third world countries will cease to exist on the sporting world.
The obvious reason is that taking drugs is cheating. If everybody used drugs then nobody would say a word. But drugs are illegal and if you take them you gain an unfair advantage over someone that doesn't. That's not right in anyones book. We attempt to raise our children to become fair, decent human beings with high moral values by working hard and not taking the easy shortcut. If they see their favourite athletes-people they idolise- taking substances (even if they are legalised) and taking the easy path to greatness what sort of example does that give them?
But who makes the rules over what is right and what is wrong? The ancient Greeks used to give secret herbs to their athletes to "help" them in their games but it was never considered cheating. There is too much money involved in sports these days especially in the Olympics-just take a look at how Atlanta won the so called "coca cola" Olympics. Unfortunately that's the reason of steroid use-you win a gold medal you are set for life especially if you are never caught. Disgraced sprinter Marion Jones might go to jail and is humiliated but she is financially secure for life.
The other major factor is the abuse of your body that drug taking results in. If a high performance athlete uses drugs in their whole career-say 15-20 years- no matter how money they will have won will help them get to old age. An athlete is injecting powerful drugs into their body every day/week or whatever. That is not natural nor healthy. That's why it's called ABUSE. Early death due to this abuse is practically guaranteed. If steroids become legal sports stars will become rock stars in the sense that they will die before their time due to drug abuse. A perfect example is Florence Griffith-Joyner who died at age 36. Although never proven that she was a drug cheat her death is very suspicious especially considering her records are STILL untouchable two decades later.

I didn't choose to write in this column because I advocate opening the floodgates to whatever substances people want to use.
