Supplies needed for a family first aid kit

Everyone should possess a well stocked first-aid kit and have it in a handy location at home. The most important items in your family's kit may be names and numbers. Have, stuck inside your kit and near your telephone, numbers for you're: family doctor, your local hospital, ambulance and your two closest friends (in case you need immediate assistance, such as childcare. The contents of your kit will vary depending upon the number of people it is designed to protect as well as special circumstances where it will be used.

For example, if a family member is a known diabetic; your kit should contain a glucose or sugar solution. If a family member has asthma, or is allergic to bee stings, peanuts or shellfish-or has some other type of life threatening allergy carry the medication on you and keep a spare set in your first-aid kit. Always make sure these items are in date.

It is strongly recommended that you take a first aid course, so that you know how to help if someone is suddenly injured or taken ill.

Also keep in mind that dozens of essential oils have healing properties, so your basic aromatherapy first-aid kit only requires a few of them to put together a handy, portable first-aid unit.

A small selection of essential oils included in your basic first-aid kit can help you deal with most of the little accidents and emergencies that life throws your way and will take up little space in a cupboard at home. Accidents do happen, so being prepared can save you a lot of pain and inconvenience and, if the wound is minor, it will benefit greatly from immediate treatment.

Be sure to familiarize yourself with the different uses of the oils you carry and how to apply them-for instance it is useful to know that lavender and tea tree oil can be applied neat to the skin. Of course, all oils have healing qualities, so it is up to you to prepare a set for the kind of problems you're likely to encounter-be it on holiday, a day out with the children of around the home.

Knocks and muscle strains, stomach aches, headaches and period pains are all unpleasant and can dull your mental processes. These are best treated with analgesic, or pain-relieving oils, such as lavender for migraines, insect bites, burns, cuts and grazes and period pains; marjoram and rosemary for headaches and muscle pain; peppermint and clary sage for hangovers and upset stomachs.

Many oils have anti-inflammatory properties. These can be used to soothe grazed and sunburned skin, ease fevers and relax sore muscles.
