Halloween is the eve of All Saints Day. The day is actually "All Souls Day." It's a good day to remember all the souls who have gone before us, whether they were saints, or sinners, famous or infamous. Sometimes we might remember them by dressing up like them, or by visiting grave yards where they are buried. Christians surely should pray for the eternal repose of the souls who have gone ahead of us. We could celebrate the fact that Jesus came to save sinners and to bring mercy to all who call upon Him.
Additionally, Halloween is a time when adults may want to contemplate the eternal tension between good and evil as it is played out in our world today. We should consider the consequences of sin and those frightening passages where Jesus talks about hell! Certainly such positive interpretation and meditations are more productive than declaring it a day that belongs to the devil!
We Americans aren't very good at facing death and disease. Yet departure from this life is inevitable for every individual. Perhaps an evening spent talking about "retuning to the dust" is not a total loss. Likewise discussions of great disasters or plagues of the past (not just biblical plagues) can make us realistically aware of the pain and sorrow of those who lived through things that we can only hope will not come upon our generation.
Let us not abandon Halloween to the darkness, but lift our hearts to Jesus who is our eternal security and our light, even in the midst of darkness, despair and death. Of course Christians should not celebrate evil and death, but we should acknowledge that they are real. What we can celebrate is Gods promise to be with us in every storm of life!
