up and down isn't super thrilling either. Riding outside is much more fun and will tend to keep you exercising longer.
#6 There are places close to your home that you have never seen
Bikes let you explore your local area. You find new ways to get places, and take highways less. I recently found a whole subdivision that I never knew existed and it was less than a mile from my house. A lot of places that I now go regularly, I only know about because I found them on my bike.
#5 If the car don't work
You will always have an "option #2" when it come to getting places. You may also want to think of it this way If it takes 20 min to get there in a car, and 60 minutes to get there on a bike, then you just did 60 minutes of exercise but only lost 40 minutes of your day. So in addition to saving yourself some cash, you just cut 20 useless minutes out of your day.
#4 Competition:
Lets face it, we all love to win, and you can't win if you don't compete. Bicycle racing drives a lot of people to healthier lifestyles and happier lives. A lot of people just like to compete, and this is a great outlet.
#3 Everyone else is doing it
You will meet a lot of people riding bikes that you would not otherwise meet. Most major cities have clubs or groups of people who ride together, which helps form some lasting friendships. If you are less "friend" oriented, you may also think of these groups as an easy group of people with whom you can build rapport and cultivate as business leads. Either way, you will meet a lot of people and have some fun.
#2 The Doc Says
30 minutes of exercise daily will decrease your risk of heart disease and any number of other things. Study after study shows that a healthy lifestyle will allow you to live longer, and cycling will help you along this path.
#1 Snickers Bars taste better that Gas
And the number one reason to ride bikes is that your fuel is food, not gas. Someone once chided me that the Krispy Kream that I was eating had around 400 Calories. I simply replied that that meant I "got" to ride an extra 10 miles. Try this experiment When was the last time you enjoyed a meal? When was the last time you enjoyed filling up your car with gas? My point here is that if your transportation depends on a fuel that you enjoy using, you are more likely to go places and have more fun doing it.
Right now there is a huge "Save the Earth" crowd screaming "why didn't you include saving the environment?" To them I say two things First this is my top ten, and like I said to start with, there are lots of reasons I am not going to include. Second, we as a species WILL use all the oil we can suck out of the ground. I have come to accept that, only I will care less when the oil runs out, because I am not as dependant on it.
So no matter what your reasons, enjoy your bike, keep the wind at your back, and keep the rubber side down.
